An Analytical Study on Clinical Nurses¢¥ Attitude and Perception toward Nursing Specialization in Korea


Abstract
This study is an extension of the questionnarie of clinical nurses¢¥ attitude and perception toward the nursing specialization in Korea. A convenience sample was drawn from 1200 clinical nurses working in nine regional administrative districts of Korea, literally covering all regions. Twelve hundred questionnaires were analyzed through the statistica 1 analysi s system (SAS).
The major findings include the following:
1. Most working clinical nurses want to see nursing specialization in clinical nursing settings in Korea.
2. The framework of nursing specialization most clinical nurses expect is either the ICN or Styles models according to the Korean government¢¥s health delivery system.
3. Appropriate titles for each level of the nurse is as follows: Generalist as "RN, GanHoSa", Nurse practitioner as "the Certified Nurse(CN), BoonYaByul GanHoSa, for example, Jung?ShinBoKun GanHoSa", and certified nurse with master¢¥s degree as "Advanced Practice Nurse(APN), for example, JungShinJunMoon GanHoSa".
4. The criteria and standards of training programs for CN and APN should be collaboratively formulated by specialty groups and the Korean Academy of Nursing.
5. The current length of training for certified nurse is appropriate(one?year).
6. Those who want APN designation should pass the KAN Board examination, and be certified by government.
7. 52.3% of clinical nurses want to pursue certification as CN or APN within four years from now. The major areas of specialization are Med?Surgical Nursing, Community Nursing, Psych?Mental Health Nursing, Maternal?Child Nursing, and Genrontological Nursing.
